to regain the nature of goodness -- review of ‘oliver twist’ oliver twist one of the most famous works of charles dickens’ is a novel reflecting the tragic fact of the life in britain in 18th century.

the author who himself was born in a poor family wrote this novel in his twenties with a view to reveal the ugly masks of those cruel criminals and to expose the horror and violence hidden underneath the narrow and dirty streets in london. the hero of this novel was oliver twist an orphan who was thrown into a world full of poverty and crime. he suffered enormous pain such as hunger thirst beating and abuse. while reading the tragic experiences of the little oliver i was shocked by his sufferings. i felt for the poor boy but at the same time i detested the evil fagin and the brutal bill. to my relief as was written in all the best stories the goodness eventually conquered devil and oliver lived a happy life in the end. one of the plots that attracted me most is that after the theft little oliver was allowed to recover in the kind care of mrs. maylie and rose and began a new life. he went for walks with them or rose read to him and he worked hard at his lessons. he felt as if he had left behind forever the world of crime and hardship and poverty.

how can such a little boy who had already suffered oppressive affliction remain pure in body and mind? the reason is the nature of goodness. i think it is the most important information implied in the novel by dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. although i don’t think goodness is omnipotent yet i do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded. for me the nature of goodness is one of the most necessary character for a person. goodness is to humans what water is to fish. he who is without goodness is an utterly worthless person.

on the contrary as the famous saying goes ‘the fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose’ he who is with goodness undoubtedly is a happy and useful person. people receiving his help are grateful to him and he also gets gratified from what he has done and thus he can do good to both the people he has helped and himself.

the view of pride and prejudice

pride and prejudice is my favorite novel, which impresses me for a long time. it describes a love story mainly between elisabeth, who i like the best, and a rich and proud man, darcy.

the story began with the arrival of a crowd of rich men who rent a house near the bennet. in a ball, elisabeth gave such a bad impression on darcy's first pride that she refused darcy's first proposal. darcy was so surprised by elisabeth's refusal that he loved elisabeth more deeply. and elisabeth's antipathy(厭惡,憎恨) made darcy realize his shortcomings. he was not angry about elisabeth's censure, but also he changed his previous proud attitude. during elisabeth's travel in darcy's manor(莊園)。 darcy was very nice to her uncle and aunt, different from previous proud attitude. when one of elisabeth's sisters ran away with wickham, darcy helped elisabeth find her sister and prevent her sister from the loss of reputation, with nobody knowing that it was he who helped the bennet. so many changes in darcy eliminated(消除) elisabeth's prejudice. at last it end with their marriage.

taking the daily life as its material, this story reflected the life and love in a conservative你(保守派) and blocking england town. it reflected the author's view about marriage that it is fault to marry for property, money and status and it is also foolish to take these elements into account. in fact darcy's pride manifested(證明) the gap (間隙,差距)between their statuses(地位)。 since his pride existed, there is no ideal marriage between elisabeth and darcy. from the different attitudes from darcy's two proposals, it reflected the feminine(女性) pursuit of personality independence and right equality, which is a progressive(先進(jìn)的) character from the image of elisabeth.

do you know harry potter? it’s one of my favourite sparetime readings and it’s written by j. k. rowling. she had the idea about harry potter when she was on train, “harry just walked into my head.” she said later. she started writing the first edition of harry potter the next day.

harry potter is a magical school student who wears glasses and has no parents, now he is 16 years old. he is very brave and known by everyone because he is the only person who will not die by devil. at school, he has two good friends, they are rone and henry.

when read the book my first time, i feel very exciting and interesting. so i read it again and again, each time i have different feelings, sometimes i even feel as if i’m one of potter’s partners. now there are five edition of harry potter published and they are very popular with young students. books about harry potter have sold millions of copies all over the world. do you like harry potter? if you haven’t rea

d the book yet, read it now and you’ll find a wonderful world.

i have got a lot of interesting scientific knowledge from the books of national geographic reading expeditions, some of which are about life, physics. i really can’t help losing myself in the colorful pictures and clear words in the books. after reading the books, i have been considering a question: what if we lived without science? great changes have taken place in the world with the help of science. in the past, life was nasty, brutish and short. it is hard to imagine how our forefathers could do without so many conveniences that modern science brings about. back then, only a small group of people enjoyed the very few forts. but the majority of people didn’t even have sufficient food, let along their privilege to be educated. anyway, it is science that changes the world and makes people’s life better and better, although it also leads to some bad aspects at the same time.

from the discovery of the gravity to the first step on the moon, we human beings have experienced a long process of developing science. and now, this process is still continuing much faster. new organisms are already being engineered, and new genetically modified crops promise benefits from higher yields and less use of harmful chemicals and so on. a lot of examples are showing this point. in the future, changes are likely to be even much greater as science reaches out to shape life itself. maybe one day, the possibility that life existed on mars billions of years ago will be potentially one of the greatest discoveries of our time. it is the force of the petition, we human beings’ inquiring mind and initiative that bring about the non-stopped development of science. therefore, it is difficult and impossible to prevent science from changing the world and our life as well.

at present, we are in two minds about science. on the one hand, we are enjoying the sweet life as a result of the evelopment of science, and expect it to continue. and we are showing our interests into some scientific expeditions, such as the astronomy, the alien civilization, etc. on the other hand, we are distrustful of it, due to the lack of understanding of science. some people thus far are still very superstitious, and they would even believe in superstitions rather than believe in science.

stephen hawking, one of the most remarkable scientists in the world, once said, “in a democratic society, the public needs to have a basic understanding of the science, so that it can make informed decisions and not leave them in the hands of experts.” this has reminded me of professor alan g. macdiarmid from america, the person who got the nobel prize for chemistry in the year of xx. in his lecture at peking university this year, he put forward that science is people. he also expounded the importance of the basic science for the public. evidently, every one of us does need science, or we can’t live without it.

now that everyone needs science, why not take advantage of some means to give the public the right basic scientific knowledge? so when they face the problems such as acid rain, the greenhouse effect, nuclear weapons, environment destruction and some other problems, they can also make informed decisions on these subjects, just as what hawking said. one aspect relies on what is taught in schools. but science is often taught in an uninteresting way and most students just learn it by rote to pass examinations. however, the final goal of learning science is not to pass examinations or to get a higher score; instead, we should try to make full use of it to change our world and life. while learning, we should try to ask more questions and we should have the courage of suspecting the knowledge in the books, as some of the scientific conclusions are likely to be corrected in the future. who knows. so not only must we change our attitude towards science, but also the way of teaching and learning science.

in addition, science is always changing at a fast rate, and who we learn at school isn’t that sufficient to last a lifetime. so the mass media including tv, radio, newspaper, magazine and publishing pany will play an important role in reporting the latest science in time. moreover, the mass media can also popularize basic science to the public, because only in this way will more people realize what on earth science is.

“scientists and engineers tend to express their ideas in the form of equations because they need to know the precise values of quantities. but for the rest of us, a qualitative grasp of scientific concepts is sufficient, and this can be conveyed by words and diagrams, without the use of equations”, said stephen hawking.

i agree with him very much, and, i’m fond of the wonderful words above, from stephen hawking.

for the development of science, are you ready?

during national day holiday, i read "moby dick", the author of this book is the united states · herman melville.

this book is about the hero to marie employed by dquo ” colonial struggle; sea whale hunting. captain yakha was a cunning old mariner, planning to · moby dick, a white whale who had destroyed one of his last legs, and dick's revenge. the officer tried to persuade ahab starbuck give up revenge, but the crazy old man obeyed him stress. later, they found the white whale, ahab in combat for three days and after the whale anger, sank “ colonial struggle, ” all the people only to be rescued marie.

i like the characters in this book very much. the hero, marie, sometimes appears timid and weak, but when he is in trouble, he will think of his dream and try his best to overcome the difficulties. he was friendly and helpful, and all the sailors liked him very much. and to marie's friend, he is an indian, queequeg, weird names. although it looks very ugly, looks very scary, but he is kind-hearted, disaster comes from “ see god ” advice, and rescue you.

i also like the plot of the story. it's thrilling and exciting. once, while killing beluga whales. a harpoon hand was the harpoon rope around the neck, was dragged into the whale sea, seeing he was not saved, we have scared kneel on the ground, and queequeg did not hesitate to jump into the sea, risked his life to rescue the harpooners. his amazing courage made everyone like him.

from this book, i realize the hard work of sailing, the bravery and wit of the sailors and the gaff at that time.

i will introduce this book to you, and i hope you will read it.

i first read it in a summer. i did not finish it at a single sitting. however, the moment i finished it, near midnight in a sweltering august day, with my body poured with sweat, held my breath to turn the last page over, shut the book and heaved a sigh of relief, i just could not express how i felt. all were over: trouble was over; lives were over; hopes were over. i was shocked how such a small book could contain such a complicated story. never were wars, diseases and starvation ever nakedly exposed to me like this. the turns in plots were surprising but natural.

it was a tragedy: just as its name suggested, everything was gone with the wind, including families’ touch, friends’ support, sweethearts’ gaze and youth with vigour. the story reminds us of valuing all we were possessing. a life lasts for a short time and anything in it lasts shorter. we always lose something unconsciously and then feel regretful when we need them later.

characters in the story were so vivid as if they had been going to jump out of the story, as if they had been existed in the real life at first.

“l(fā)and is the only thing in the world that amounts to anything, for ‘this the only thing in this world that lasts, and don’t you be forgetting it’ this the only thing worth working for, worth fighting for--worth dying for.” said gerald, an irish man who loved his soil more than his own life, let us know that life can be born out of land.

“but scarlett, did it ever occur to you that even the most deathless love could wear out? mine wore out, against ashley wilkes and your insane obstinacy that makes you hold on like a bulldog to anything you think about.”

“scarlett, i was never one to patient pick up broken fragment glue them together and tell myself that the mended whole was as good as new. what is broken is broken--and i’d rather remember it as it was at its best than mend it and see the broken places as long as i lived.” said rett butler, a man who love scalett as much as a man can love a woman. loving her for years before he finally got her, he loved her crazily but did not let her know it for fear of being hurt. but at last he still could not escape from hurts. “my dear, i don’t give a damn.” look, he did not care about it at all. he was a man who disguised himself so much.

“i mustn’t bawl; i mustn’t beg. i mustn’t do anything risk his contempt. he must respect me even--even if he doesn’t love me.”

“i’ll think of it all tomorrow, at tara. i can stand it then. tomorrow, i’ll think some way to get him back. after all, tomorrow is another day.”

said scalett o’hara, the most wonderful woman i’ve ever seen. she was hard and greedy and unscrupulous, a brave, frightened, bull-headed child. though she only thought about how to attract man’s attention and did not do anything useful before the war, she did surprise me when i read about her doings after the war. at that time, her tara was just reduced to ashes. everyone sketched out their hands and asked her for food. she bravely faced the reality and rebuilt tara with her own hands. what a tough woman, i thought. though those she loved were all gone, she was still full of hope. when rett didn’t love her anymore and wanted to leave her, she said “i mustn’t bawl… even if he doesn’t love me.” a woman’s dignity could be seen from what she have said and done. that’s why i appreciate her.

this novel gave me too much to think about and i can not fully express myself in english. it is true that reading an origin is more vivid than the translated ones. however, my english level limits me to understand the origin well without the translated. but i will work hard in order to understand better.
